David Bilfeld is the CEO of Distinct Management & Investments. He’s been a national commercial real estate investor for over 20 years. He is living the dream in Topanga, CA, with the love of his life, their beautiful baby girl Lennon, and their dog-child Rebel.

But if you had met him five years ago, to be honest, he was very different. A workaholic, he wasn’t focused on employee happiness. In dating, he had no idea how to give or receive love meaningfully. He had a deep fear of a long-term relationship without fully knowing it. As soon as it looked like it might be going somewhere, he would blow it up, petrified of what could unfold. The failure of every relationship was thought to be because they weren’t right for him. He was a full-blown avoidant.

When it came to family, it wasn’t any better. He was completely denying his childhood, attached to a fiction of what it was, and hadn’t addressed any of the anger and resentment in his relationship with his mother. He had zero compassion and patience with her, and zero understanding of why. In all areas of his life, he was shut down, out of touch, and unable to really feel himself or anyone else.

What changed? As luck would have it, the medicine knocked on his door…literally. Already “on the path” of self-work, 1heart became the next step. He had no idea just how fundamentally transformative one experience could be. Even when he did the homework and set his intentions, he could have never anticipated the impact on his life when his heart would truly break open. It changed everything. He cried for the first time in 15 years. He felt his heart for the first time since he was a kid. Slowly, he began to experience his life and everyone in it through his heart.
